I wrote about the Driscoll’s Consumer Advisory Panel when it first started a couple years ago and this morning I was notified of some pretty great changes coming up.
From the email I received:
“We are excited to announce that due to the popularity of Driscoll’s Consumer Advisory Program, we are switching from a coupon-based reward system to a point-based system. The flexibility of this new system will allow for the accumulation of points which can be redeemed in the form of electronic gift cards. The point system and thresholds for redemption is as follows:
Once you’ve earned enough points, you will be given the opportunity to continue accumulating your point balance or redeem your points towards a selection of gift cards from popular companies. In the new reward system, your points will roll over into the new year until redeemed and your gift cards do not expire.
These changes will take effect on Monday, November 4th, 2019. Please note that due to maintenance, access to the survey portal will be temporarily unavailable between Thursday, October 31, 2019 through Sunday, November 3, 2019.
The link below contains more information on Driscoll’s Consumer Advisory Panel, including frequently asked questions: https://www.driscolls.com/panel/faq“
So there you have it! If you’ve been saving codes, like me, you won’t have too much longer! I can’t wait to see what kinds of gift cards they will offer (fingers crossed for Amazon).
Recently, we noticed that our box fans weren’t providing much cool air. Before dropping over $150 to replace them all, I decided to see if cleaning them would improve their airflow capabilities. After all, they were still functioning mechanically, they weren’t putting out the air flow they used to.
With temperatures in excess of 80 degrees almost all year round here, box fans are a needed appliance in our home. We can’t go without them, as running the AC is cost-prohibitive.
Oh dear.
These fans are all about a year old, and while I have vacuumed the front and back of them previously (I do it once a week), they had never been taken apart and cleaned.
Gather all the tools needed before you start. For this job you will need:
A sheet to cover your work area.
A screwdriver (our fans all have Philips head screws)
A dish to hold the screws while the fan is disassembled
All-purpose cleaner. I used Comet Lilac Bliss- it’s what we had in the house, and it worked really well.
A stiff-bristled brush. I used the brush I use to scrub the soap scum/hard water deposits out of the bathtubs (like this)
Rags or really scratchy paper towels. You need something that will trap the dirt.
Vacuum Cleaner with a brush attachment.
Before: This stuff was tough to scrub off!Once again, my Dyson Vacuum saves the day! After: So fresh and so clean!
Here are my tips for deep cleaning your fans-
UNPLUG THEM! It seems like a no-brainer, but I’m going to remind you to not clean appliances that are still plugged in.
Remove the front and back plastic pieces of the fan. Ours were held together with 6 screws.
To remove the dirt/fuzz/cat/hair/whatever grossness that was on the fan front and back, I placed them in the bathtub and sprayed them down with all-purpose cleaner. I allowed them to sit for about 20 minutes while I cleaned the fan blade and fan case.
Using all-purpose cleaner and a rag, carefully spray and wipe the fan blades, both front and back sides.
Using the vacuum hand tool with the brush attachment, clean the interior of the fan case, as well as the backside of the fan motor. I was amazed at the amount of fuzz, dirt, and hair was around the intakes for the fans.
Once the fan blades and fan case are clean, return to the bathroom and scrub the fan front and back. Rinse and dry completely.
Reattach the front and back to the fan case, plug in and test out. All 6 fans worked 100% better after being cleaned. This is now a chore that has been added to the end of season home cleaning list.
Re-assembled and working like new!
Cleaning all of the fans took about 2 hours, and that included time to make snacks for two very starving kids, let the cat in and out a few times and help with math homework. Without distractions, I could have gotten done in about an hour.
In the future, I may invest in some of these Box Fan Filters, which until today I had no idea existed.
Taking care of appliances, like these box fans is just another way that we are able to extend the useful life of often-used items in our homes, and that saves us money in the long run.
Talk Back: What types of small things do you do to extend the life of your small appliances?
I bought a few things yesterday to sort of “round out” what we’ve got on hand, and I think I’ll hit up Sprouts on Wednesday for Double Ad Day to get produce, but other than, we’ll be eating a lot of the stuff in the freezer I recently meal prepped this week. I don’t feel really great (Big kid brought home the new germ du jour from school and it’s felled us all).
I’ve gotten a pretty good inventory of the pantry, freezer, and fridge done, so I’m able to plan meals and use up what we’ve got with little waste. If you are looking for kitchen inventory printable, I like the kitchen inventories here. They are great printables.
You may notice a lot of plant-based meals- We are not vegetarian, but I am trying to get more veggies into our diet. I do a lot of cooking from scratch- I find it easier to get veggies and fruit into recipes that I can have 100% control over.
I only post our dinner plans for the week, because our other meals are usually the same each day:
Breakfast: Coffee with heavy cream for me, and pancakes or something along those lines for the kids (they love the Kodiak Cakes Mix). I also keep sandwich Ziploc bags of other frozen fruit on hand to make the kids smoothies when they request them (a few times per week). Berries, peaches, and mangos are pretty popular.
Lunches are leftovers, salads, or soups for me and Bitty. The big kid takes his lunch to school, but once in a while, I can convince him to buy his lunch.
For dinner, when we’ve got busy days (like Mondays), I’ll try and put something in the crockpot in the morning, or pull something I’ve already prepped out that can be quickly cooked. I did a lot of prep for the coming week over the weekend. I cut up the produce, bagged it for meals, made up some smoothie kits, and cut up cantaloupe to have this week. Thanks to some frugal shopping over the weekend, I’ve only spent half the grocery budget for the week. I will probably use it all.
Wednesday: Chicken Meatball skillet (new recipe coming up this week)
Thursday: Pizza Night – The past few weeks we’ve been doing individual personally topped pizzas- It’s super fun and everyone gets what they want.
Friday: Breakfast for Dinner- Waffles, Poached Eggs, sausage, and fruit salad
Saturday: Dinner out! My cousin, his wife, and kiddo are coming from AZ with my Uncle and Aunt. We are having a big family dinner out. At Soupantation!
Sunday: Leftover night
Talk Back: What are you planning to cook this week?
Wednesday I opened our mailbox to discover a flat rate envelope addressed to me. Now, as a blogger, it isn’t uncommon to receive stuff in the mail. Tickets/comps to shows and events, samples, products to review, and even checks when I get paid for writing. Most of the time, these days, PR firms pay via Venmo, Paypal or EFT/Wire Transfer. I wasn’t expecting anything.
Something about this was… weird. Different. I didn’t recognize the name on the return address. The Envelope was light. I opened it and found this letter and check:
Oh, so many things went through my head as I read this letter.
OMG- So many fonts! That by itself SCREAMS SCAM! Also- That’s not what the USPS Logo looks like. The one on the letter is all stretched out and pixelated.
I never signed up to audit/secret shop the US Postal Service. That’s not even something that is done by an outside party/company (I called the local post office at talked to someone- They straight up told me it was a scam.).
When a letter is not on company letterhead with an office address, phone number, email address, and website- It’s a scam.
When you are given a task to do and you are told to DEPOSIT A CHECK INTO YOUR BANK ACCOUNT- It’s a scam. Real, honest, legit secret shopping companies do not tell you to do that. They don’t front you the money. They reimburse you. And also- $2000 in untraceable money orders? IT’S A SCAM.
When I called the “text only numbers” there was no answer at either one.
Speaking of the phone numbers… Area codes 646 and 914 are both in New York state, but the return address on the priority envelope I received was from Pahrump, NV. SCAM.
The RE: line on my “check” says Cherie Miller, but I have no idea who that is. She’s not the person who sent me the check, and that name doesn’t appear on any of the paperwork. SCAM
After I read the letter and looked over the check, I went into full investigation mode. Back when I worked in property management, one of my favorite parts of the job was to search for people who owed various clients (HOA’s) money. Finding people to get them to pay delinquent accounts involves a high degree of “google-Fu”, which I pride myself on.
VyStar Credit Union is a for really real Credit Union in Florida. I called their customer service number and talked to a cool rep. I explained what I had, gave her the routing number and account number. Now, the routing number on this check does not match the routing number on their website. Some banks and financial institutions list their routing numbers on their websites to assist customers. The Customer Service confirmed: THE CHECK WAS NOT REA, NOR WAS IT DRAWN ONA REAL ACCOUNT. Meaning, if I had deposited it, the check would bounce like a rubber ball. I would be hit with fees, and be responsible for paying my bank back the amount the check was written for.
At this point, I wasn’t really sure what to do. Call the DA? Call the FBI (It is mail fraud and came from out of state)? Call the local Post office (which I later did and they didn’t care)? I asked my mom, and she suggested I call Consumer Bob (he’s a local media figure, I messaged him on Facebook but never heard back). I called the DA and spoke to a Legal Secretary. She said to mail it to them and they’d put it in their fraud file. She said not to bother the FBI.
So why am I writing about this today? Because if I get one of these letters, many other people will too. People who need money, people who want to do secret shops/audits to make a little extra money. Not everyone will think with a clear or level head. They’ll take the check to the bank and deposit it ASAP without doing any research.
So I’m going to repeat myself: Real, honest, legit secret shopping companies do not tell you to do that. They don’t front you the money. They reimburse you after you turn your report and receipts in.
If you want to learn a little more about other types of scams that I’ve come across, here is a good article. And if you are looking for a way to make a little extra money doing secret shops or audits, check out my post here about Field Agent. Field Agent is legit. I earn money with them every week doing small audits and shops. We got free pizza last week at Little Caesar’s and earned a little extra money too!
What did I end up doing with the letter, check, and envelope? It’s going to the DA next week.
Please share this post with your friends and family, especially if you have older family members who may not have great internet searching skills, or may need to earn some money. This scam can devastate an individual or family’s financial situation.

My Taco Salad is a little different than most, there is no big, greasy, deep-fried shell. Instead, I use tortilla chips as a garnish. This was one of the first recipes I concocted after we committed healthy eating about 10 years ago. It’s very filling and has tons of veggies.
There are all kinds of changes and modifications that can be made to accommodate any dietary concerns.
Not Your Average Taco Salad
Ingredients:
1 lb ground meat of your choice (Beef, chicken, turkey, or pork, or a mixture)
1 yellow onion, diced
1 T. olive oil
1 packet taco seasoning
1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1 can corn, drained and rinsed (or you can use 1.5 cups of frozen corn)
1/4 cup water (or however much the packet tells you to use)
With the following ingredients, use as much as you’d like, I prep 1/2 cup-1 cup per person:
Chopped tomatoes
Chopped bell peppers (I usually use one red, one yellow, and one orange pepper for color/variety)
Shredded carrots
Cucumber slices
Avocado slices or guacamole, whichever you prefer
Shredded or crumbled cheese
Black Olive Slices
Jalapeno peppers Slices
Sour Cream or plain Greek yogurt
Salsa of your choice
Directions:
Brown meat, set aside.
Using any residual fat in the pan, and adding olive oil, cook onions until clear and soft.
Add meat back to pan, mix in taco seasoning and water. Cook as directed on the taco seasoning packet.
Add in both cans of beans and corn, cook until heated throughout.
To plate, on a dinner plate or a big bowl- arrange 2 cups greens, top with 1/4-1/2 cup meat/bean mixture, top with other veggies and 1/2 cup chips and cheese and a dollop of sour cream/sour cream.
If you NEED dressing, mix a little sour cream or plain Greek Yogurt with salsa or hot sauce and top your salad.
For a vegetarian taco salad- use soy/veggie crumbles instead of meat.
