My Top Ten Tootsie Treats for Tired Toes (and feet)

Birkenstocks, my favorite sandal!

As someone who is on their feet almost all day, I find the health and comfort of my feet imperative. I’ve tried many gadgets, lotions, creams, and doodads to keep my feet comfy. I’ve been under a podiatrist’s care for 4 years now, and there is no substitute for professional care. The items listed below were okayed by my doctor, and several were recommended. But remember- My doctor is not your doctor, and I’m definitely not a doctor, so if you have foot pain that lasts a long time or is getting worse, get a referral to a podiatrist.

Below are items that I use, and I’ve linked them to the places I bought them too. A lot of this stuff comes from Target, which is great because they always have sales and deals going on. Don’t forget to use your RedCard to save an extra 5%!!

Compression socks. They aren’t just for old people. I have wide calves, so these are my go-to. They come in various colors/patterns and sizes, including plain colors, checkered, and holiday designs.

I have about 10 pairs of these socks and I wear them daily.

A good foot roller. I have this one from Target, but Amazon sells a few different kinds too. My doctor recommended a kind that goes in the freezer, so it cools your tired feet simultaneously. For me, that’s too many sensations at once. I use mine daily in the afternoon once I’m home from work.

Baby Feet Foot Peel. I have dry feet. No matter how much lotion or bag balm I put on my heels, I get dry, cracked heels. Especially in the winter when it’s so dry. I do a Baby Feet foot peel about once a quarter. It’s kinda gross but kinda cool.

A Toe Stretcher (also called YogaToes). These things are amazing. It’s a tiny, stretchy contraption that goes between your toes and helps stretch out. It’s also great if you wear a lot of narrow toe box shoes.

Epsom Salts.  I soak my feet in very hot water with Epsom Salts twice a week. I like the big bag from Target. It’s a great price.

Magnesium Spray. Some studies suggest Epsom salts can relieve swelling, and inflammation, and ease muscle aches and pains. I use it on my feet and legs each night before I hop into bed. It comes in a lot of different scents. I have this one in lavender.

If sprays aren’t your thing, Astura makes an awesome thick lotion, almost like a body butter packed with Magnesium. It comes in a lemongrass scent. It’s awesome. I linked it on Amazon, but sometimes Target carries it.

Insoles. It’s hard to know what kind of insoles you need without some guidance, as there are so many styles and types based on your foot health. Some drugstores have a Dr. School’s custom fit orthotics machine in them and those are good for figuring out what kind of insoles you need. My doctor provides me with orthotics that slip into my sneakers. I can also buy them on Amazon (They are Cadence brand), but I have zero out-of-pocket for them other than my copay, which is cheaper than how much they cost on Amazon.

My number one recommendation: GOOD SHOES. Yeah, simple, right? Good shoes with a stable heel and toe box wide enough for your foot. That means no pinching or rubbing. Don’t be afraid to size up or go up to wide or extra-wide shoes.

As we age, the ligaments and tendons that provide arch support in our feet loosen and become worn, due to our natural body changes (thanks Cleveland Clinic!).

My doctor recommends New Balance, Saucony, Hokas, and Brooks. I wear New Balance Fresh Foam sneakers most of the time because they come in a double-wide, which my feet have become.  They are costly, but they last me about a year, and that’s with daily wear.  If you don’t have wide feet or an unusual size, Joe’s New Balance Outlet has a lot of great deals. I try to shop there when I can.

That’s only 9 you are probably thinking. The last one isn’t a product or a service. It’s some advice:

Put your feet up! When you are seated at the end of the day, don’t crisscross applesauce. Put your feet up: on the couch, on an ottoman, on a nearby stool or chair. Allow the blood to circulate. Wiggle your toes, flex the muscles in your feet and legs.

How to prepare when Mom needs surgery

I will be having surgery next month, for the first time since I’ve had kids, and that’s 13 years.

I am excited because I need the surgery, but I know it’s gonna come with some downtime. I’ve been doing some research and I thought I would share some ways that I’m getting everybody and our house ready, so it doesn’t fall apart when I am incapacitated after surgery.

The Month before:

1. Talk to your insurance carrier to confirm co-pays, and work out a payment plan or apply for financial aid if needed.

2. Post Op snacks.  I will be doing some shopping over the next month and squirrel away good snacks I find on sale and putting them out the day before I head out for surgery. Snacks will be shelf stable, or things that require no preparation other than opening a package or putting it on a plate or bowl.

3. Make sure all of the bills are set up on auto-pay during the month I’ll be recovering.

4. Make some freezer meals, or set up a meal train (lean on your village if you have one). Not everyone has a village to lean on, and in that case, I suggest Dream Dinners. They have meals that need to go into the oven- perfect for post surgery dinners.

The Week Of:

5. Clean house! I don’t want to recuperate in a messy, dusty, cluttered house. In the month leading up to surgery, I am organizing the house, putting unneeded stuff away, or giving it away. The problem I’m running into is that our house is still in an active construction zone because of the water loss we sustained in January. As soon as our kitchen is done, I will have less of an issue with that.

5. Clean off the nightstand: Clean it off, declutter, and change the lightbulb in my bedside lamp- just in case.

6. Pick up your post-surgery medications if possible. If not, have them filled at the hospital pharmacy and pick them up before checking out of the hospital. Fill up your weekly medication pill boxes (if you use them). Ditto for any kiddo meds.

The Night Before:

7. Clean Bedding: In the days before, I will put clean sheets on the bed, wash the blankets, and fresh pillowcases.

8. Take an everything shower. Don’t forget any pre-op body wash that is prescribed.

9. Follow your doctor’s orders for eating and drinking.

10. Get a Good night’s rest. Aim for 8-10 hours.

The Morning of:

11. Take any pre-op shower with body wash that is prescribed.

12. Check into the hospital at the time requested- Don’t be late!

And finally- have comfy easy-on/easy-off clothes for after your surgery, that won’t aggravate any incisions or bruising.

Today is National Child Health Day!

The first Monday of October is National Child Health Day. I’m taking a little time today to share some ways you can keep your kiddos healthy while still staying on budget.

Here is my post about how to care for your children’s vision on a budget. If your kids are hard on glasses like my big kid is, contact the company/optometrist’s office if the glasses break within 6 months of receiving them. My kiddo gets 1 pair per year through insurance, and I make sure that if anything goes wrong, we contact the office and get them repaired or replaced ASAP.

Here in California vision and dental insurance is included under health insurance plans for kids 18 and under. To learn more, check the back of your kid’s health insurance card for phone numbers.

Studies have proven that poor dental health and hygiene can lead to other more severe health issues, so please take care of the kiddos chompers! My kids love the Toms of Maine Strawberry toothpaste (also available in fluoride free).  They are not bubblegum or mint fans. Whatever it takes to get them to brush their teeth!!

Another thing that is important to overall health is PROPER REST. The CDC recommendations can be found here. My littlest is hard to get settled for bed, so here are some of the ways we help get her ready to rest each night:

Free Covid-19 Tests Delivered to Your Door!

I don’t know about you, but we’re still using Covid-19 tests on the regular. After visits to busy places, after traveling, and when the kids’ and I have someone in their class test positive.

With this offer, Request your COVID-19 Tests NOW, and don’t pay last-minute prices at the Store. They verify your insurance, and you receive Covid-19 Test Kits automatically each month at NO COST to you!

10/10/2022 Today is Mental Health Day!

Every day should be mental health day, but 10/10/2022 is International Mental Health Day. The past few years have been hard on everyone emotionally for various reasons, and it’s time to check in and make sure everyone is getting the love and support they need to get their mental health in check.

I am by no means a doctor, and I do not play one on the internet, but here are a few of my tips to foster better mental health. Most of these come from being the caregiver to two neurodivergent people, who have distinctly different mental health needs.

Check with your health insurance carrier to access mental health services. Call the phone number on the back of your health insurance id card and talk to someone. Looking online on your insurance company’s website can be too overwhelming.

If you don’t have health insurance, google sliding scale mental health services + your city. There are mental health services everywhere in person, online, and even via text or app.

Take your meds. If you are prescribed medication, please take it as prescribed. Regardless of what it’s for. When your body is healthy and cared for, that goes a long way.

Move Your Body. Exercise is not a substitution for medication or talk therapy, but it dovetails nicely. Go for a walk. Find a fitness video on Youtube (I like Yoga with Adriene). Have a family dance party, whatever you need to do to move your meatsack through space!

Drink some water. I know, I know. It’s hard to get in a bunch of water each day. Hydration helps our bodies (and minds) focus. I am a self-proclaimed beverage girl. I have 2-3 beverages at all times. I have two Yeti cups (they were promo cups, I’m too cheap to actually buy real yeti cups), plus a water bottle like this one, an insulated coffee cup  (the yeti makes my coffee stay too hot to drink for too long). If you like the style of Yeti’s tumblers, but are on a budget, I also have one of these Beast cups, and they work just as well. I also have a stash of water bottles in my car, which I am constantly refilling. I bring hte kids fresh cold water after school too- along with a snack. Which leads me to my next tip…

When is the last time you ate? Being Hangry is real. If you are hungry or thirsty your mind can become dysregulated, and that can lead to impaired cognition (or just being an asshole to people around you). Have a snack! Make snacks and food available to you and your family. Y’all know I love a good snack bin. Schedule snack times and meal times throughout your day.

Make time for yourself. I’m not going to tell you that self-care is all face masks and bubble baths. Sometimes It’s mindlessly browsing Target, texting with a friend, or cleaning out your car. Doing an activity that helps you feel better goes a long way. I wrote a post a few years ago with more self-care tips, you can check it out here.

And finally- Ask for Help.  I know this one is the hardest, at least for me. Ask for help when you need it… Before you need it. It’s as simple as delegating tasks around the house, ordering groceries from Target in-app, and doing curbside pick up. Find ways to make tasks simpler. I have a robot vacuum and it helps immensely. If you don’t have a village or closeby family or friends, rely on automation and apps.  There is no shame in asking for or hiring help (if that is available to you). If you find yourself in need of some care or gentle coaching on how to organize and clean while you are feeling stressed, I recommend KC Davis’ Book, How to Keep House While Drowning: A Gentle Approach to Cleaning and Organizing.

I’m here! If you need help finding resources, please feel free to drop me an email or leave a comment on my posts.
